Suit Therapy for Cerebral Palsy

Suit therapy is a therapy specifically designed to help children with cerebral palsy experience better muscle tone and coordination, as well as reduced spasticity.

What exactly is suit therapy? Basically, the child wears a suit similar to those worn by Russian astronauts in the 1970s to prevent muscle atrophy The suit is made up of four pieces—a vest, shorts, kneepads, and shoes—that are attached with flexible cords. The cords are adjusted based on the amount of tension on the child’s muscles that is desired.

The suit basically allows the child to engage in resistance training, similar to weight training at the gym. Suits specifically designed for CP therapy are available under brand names like TheraSuit, Adeli Suit, NeuroSuit, and Penguin suit.

Suit therapy may be one of the most effective ways to strengthen and improve muscle tone in kids with CP, but suit therapy can be expensive. While some insurance companies may pay for it, others may not. If you are having trouble getting this benefit or any other benefit that your child deserves and needs, visit our legal/financial section for more information, or contact us to find out how we can help.
