Stem Cell Therapy for Cerebral Palsy

Recently, there has been a significant amount of research regarding the use of cord blood stem cells in the treatment of cerebral palsy. Unlike other therapies, stem cells don’t just treat the symptoms of cerebral palsy. In some cases, they have been shown to actually reverse cerebral palsy. In one study of 20 children, 85% showed improved muscle tone, comprehension, and vocabulary after receiving stem cell treatment.

How do stem cells work in children with CP? Scans of kids with CP typically show a lack of blood flow in certain parts of the brain, including the thalamus, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. Stem cells that are derived from an umbilical cord, when used to treat cerebral palsy, can have a profound impact on the brain, including:

• Encouraging the growth of new blood vessels in damaged areas.
• Producing glial cells, which then help heal the white matter of the brain.
• Stimulating growth of grey matter.
• Supply oxygen and nutrients that can support the division of new neurons.
• Improving immune function in general.
• Strengthening muscle tissue.

Parents who bank their own child’s cord blood can use the stem cells from that blood in an effort to repair damaged brain tissue. However, there is still hope for children without banked cord blood; they can use the cord blood of others if it is a correct match.

Stem cell therapy is expensive, but there are several organizations that are focused on making sure that this helpful therapy is available to everyone, regardless of financial situation. Your child’s medical team will have information regarding groups in your area.

In addition, some insurance companies can be convinced to pay for this treatment with the right advocacy. If you are having trouble getting your insurance company to allow the treatment, or if requests for the treatment have been denied, contact us to learn how we can help.
