Occupational therapy is designed to help children live as independently as possible, and to succeed doing everyday tasks at home and at school, as well as socially and recreationally.
Many parents associate occupational therapy with adults, because they don’t think of children as having “occupations.” In fact, a child’s “occupation” is to learn—whether they are learning to independently dress themselves, bathe, eat, or learn to be successful at school. Occupational therapy ensures that your child has all of the tools and skills necessary to most effectively learn.
Occupational therapy is designed to address both fine and gross motor skills, as well as hand-eye coordination. It focuses on tasks and movement that will allow your child to be more independent. An occupational therapist will evaluate your child to determine where he is having difficulties, and will develop a program designed to help him succeed in everyday living tasks, school, and other activities. An occupational therapist can also help parents determine what kinds of adaptive equipment and technology can help a child achieve maximum function and independence.
Most insurances will cover occupational therapy. However, if you are being told that your benefits have run out, or if benefits are being denied, there are steps you can take to ensure your child gets the therapies and treatment he needs.
