Nutrition

Children with cerebral palsy frequently have muscle and motor control issues that make it difficult for them to chew and swallow. Because of this, many parents of children with cerebral palsy find getting enough calories and nutrients into their kids extremely difficult. As a matter of fact, about one-third of all children with cerebral palsy are malnourished.

All kids need a certain amount of calories, as well as vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, to grow and thrive. Kids with cerebral palsy are no different. When children with CP don’t get proper nutrition, they can suffer from poor growth, low energy levels, and stunted brain development.

If you have a child with cerebral palsy, you know that he needs all of the energy and brain power possible to remain in optimal health. So how do you ensure he gets enough to eat?

The first course of action should be to engage a speech therapist. Why a speech therapist? This professional can help your child learn to better use the muscles in her mouth and tongue—the same muscles that are used to chew and swallow.

The second course of action should be to speak to a registered dietician. A dietician can develop a nutrition program for your child with the right calories, nutrients, and vitamins.

If, despite therapy and advice, your child still is not getting enough nutrients, a gastronomy feeding tube may be necessary. Your doctor can help you weigh the pros and cons of a gastronomy tube, based on your child’s individual situation.
