Medication for Cerebral Palsy

Used in conjunction with therapy, certain medications can significantly reduce and control the symptoms of cerebral palsy.

Antispasmodics

Antispasmodics are perhaps the most commonly prescribed medicines for kids with cerebral palsy, and are given to control and reduce spasticity. Antispasmodics such as Diazepam, Baclofen, and Dantrolene sodium can be given in pill form, while those with severe spasms may be given Baclofen delivered via pump.

Extremely stiff or tight muscles are sometimes directly injected with antispasmodics such as phenol or alcohol washes, or Botox. These injections can often control symptoms for as long as three to eight months.

Anticonvulsants

Seizures are a common side effect of cerebral palsy. Anticonvulsants used to treat seizures include Gabapentin, Lamotrigine, Oxcarbazepine, Topiramate, and Zonisamide.

Anticholinergics

This classification of drugs is used to treat uncontrollable body movements as well as excessive drooling, and includes Benztropine mesylate, Carbidopa-levodopa, Gycopyrrolate, Procyclidine hydrochloride, and Trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride.

Laxatives

Constipation is a frequent side effect of cerebral palsy. In most cases, over-the-counter laxatives and stool softeners can help.

Considerations

When it comes to using medication to alleviate symptoms of your child’s cerebral palsy, only you and your doctor can determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Some doctors, for example, don’t like to give antispasmodics to children, believing that the side effects are worse, in the long term, than the symptoms these medicines control. Be sure to ask lots of questions and do plenty of research, so that you can make the most informed decision possible.

Finally, in the event that your insurance rejects a medication that your doctor deems necessary for your child, there are things you can do to increase your chances of getting this medication paid for.
