Hippotherapy for Cerebral Palsy

Hippotherapy is a special combination of both physical therapy and occupational therapy that takes place on horseback. The movement of the horse allows the child’s hips and core to move in the right way, helping muscle tone, coordination, mobility, balance, and limbic system function. These skills, in turn, help the child attain better gross motor skills used in sitting, standing, and walking.

Another benefit of hippotherapy is the emotional benefit. Therapists are not sure why, but being on the back of the horse can elevate the mood, promote feelings of well-being, and also significantly increase self esteem. Kids with CP who engage in hippotherapy may get to experience movement in a way they might not otherwise be able to.

Few insurance policies will pay for hippotherapy without aggressive advocacy on the pat of the parents. See our legal/financial section for information on how to navigate the system, or contact us to find out how we can help.
