Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

Ataxic cerebral palsy is the rarest form of cerebral palsy, occurring in only 5 to 10 percent of the cases of CP. Ataxic cerebral happens when the damage to the brain occurs to the cerebellum, which is located in the base of the brain. This area of the brain controls balance and coordination, and is also responsible for ensuring that muscles work together correctly.
Characteristics of Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

Ataxic cerebral palsy is characterized by lack of coordination of movement, and poor muscle tone. In most cases, ataxic cerebral palsy is widespread and affects all four limbs as well as the trunk area.
Disabilities Associated with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

One of the most common disabilities associated with ataxic cerebral palsy is tremors, which most frequently occur when the person tries to make a voluntary movement that requires fine coordination of the muscles, such as picking up an object or writing. Because of balance issues kids with ataxic CP often stand or walk with their feet wide apart, resulting in an awkward gait. Poor muscle tone makes it difficult for people with ataxic cerebral palsy to move or balance without appearing unsteady.
Treatment of Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

While there is no cure for ataxic cerebral palsy, certain treatments can keep CP under control. Treatment varies from prescription medicine and injections, to a wide variety of both mainstream and alternative therapies.
