Sports Injuries

Sports-related brain injuries account for a large number of brain injuries in children and adolescents. While most sports carry some risk, sports associated with increased risk include contact sports such as hockey, lacrosse, and football; snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding; and other more dangerous sports such as horseback riding, biking, and skateboarding.

While some head injuries are inevitable despite precautions, the risk of head injury can be reduced through the use of a proper, approved, and tested helmet.

Protective helmets are part of the sports equipment for sports such as hockey and football, but are also recommended for activities like horseback riding, bike riding, rollerblading, and skateboarding.

While wearing a helmet has reduced sports-related head injuries up to as much as 85 percent, in some cases head injuries have occurred as a result of helmets that have failed to protect their wearer.

If your child sustained a brain injury while wearing a helmet, it’s possible the helmet was in some way defective. If you think a defective helmet contributed to your child’s brain injury contact us to find out how we can help.

In the meantime, do not get rid of the helmet that was involved in the accident. Any helmet involved in a brain injury should be examined by an expert to determine its strength and durability, whether it should have prevented the injury, and whether it’s defective.
