

Here are some interesting facts and statistics regarding brain injury in children:
• The two age groups that are at the highest risk for brain injury are children between the ages of 0 and 4, and teenagers between the age of 15 and 19.
• It is estimated that 44 to 88 percent of brain injuries caused by bicycle accidents could be prevented by a helmet.
• The Brain Injury Association states that brain injury is the most common cause of disability among kids and teenagers in the United States.
• More than a million kids in the United States sustain a brain injury every year.
• Statistically, playground injuries cause more severe brain injuries than two other common causes of brain injury in children, car accidents and bicycle crashes.
• Of the children who die in playground-related accidents, three-quarters of them die as a result of a severe brain injury.
• When it comes to children under ten years old, girls are four times more likely to die from brain injury than boys.
• About 50,000 cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome occur in the United States each year.
• About 300,000 cases of traumatic brain injury occur every year in the United States as the result of accidents related to sports and recreation.
• Brain injuries account for about 15 percent of all sledding accidents.
