Free Appropriate Education
The Individuals with Disabilities Act was amended in 2004 to include the right of a free public education (FAPE). The purpose of FAPE is to give the child an education that prepares her for further education, employment, and independent living.
FAPE is defined as special education and related services that have been provided at public expense, under public supervision and direction, and without charge; that meet the standards of the state educational agency; include an appropriate preschool, elementary school, or secondary school education in the state involved; and are provided in conformity with the child’s individualized education program (IEP). |
