Cerebral Palsy Facts and Statistics  

Here are some interesting facts and statistics regarding cerebral palsy:

• A British doctor named William Little first identified cerebral palsy in 1860.
• About 764,000 adults and children in the United States currently have cerebral palsy.
• Each year, approximately 10,000 babies and children are diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
• About 1 in 278 children are affected by cerebral palsy.
• The lifetime costs of care for a child born with cerebral palsy is close to $1,000,000, not including out-of-pocket   
  expenses like hospital and emergency room visits.
• Two out of three children with cerebral palsy are mentally impaired. 
• The percentage of babies with cerebral palsy has not risen in the past 30 years.
• Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disorder in children.
• Cerebral palsy is the second most common disability in children, after autism.
• Most cerebral palsy diagnoses are made before a child is three years old.
